"You can lead a buyer to pottery, but you can't make him think"
For those of you that don't read or know about Ebay guides, below is a link to a good one. At bottom in the blue bar, please click yes if you agree -
Again this is about Larry, a member of good standing in the McCoy Pottery Society.
This is an informational and educational endeavor, I'm going to try to make this easy to follow. This is about forensics, namely fingerprints. As we know fingerprints are unique to an individual. As many people have probably never thought about, every piece of pottery has individual "fingerprints". Namely mold marks.
The McCoy pieces below are a fine example. I have highlighted some very distinct marks / "prints".
< 1 - This is real distinct, seen on both pieces.
< 2 - This mark is the same on both mail boxes. Now look closer - everything between 1 and 2 are the same.
< 3 - These black marks look the same. What a coincidence you say.
NOT ! EVERY mark is the same.
Above plain alligator sold on Ebay Dec. 9, 2009, by "sunraystuff" for $25, Ebay item # 110468067035
< 1 - This is real distinct, seen on both pieces.
< 2 - This is real distinct, seen on both pieces.
< 3 - Follow the lumps and bumps of the dark green lines.
< 4 - These light spots look the same. What a coincidence you say.
NOT ! EVERY mark is the same.
It must be the same piece of pottery
you think, ta da, you are right.

Please do what you can through Ebay to get a handle on this sort of fraud.
What else can I say? Please didn't work.
Just found (6-15-10) these on ebay, great example of individuality.
